The Santa Ana Zoo may be a quarter of the size of its big brother 100 miles down the 5 freeway, but this zoo is a hidden local gem. Elephants, Lemurs, and a healthy dose of educational exhibits (like a recent one on rain forests), make a trip to this zoo definitely worthwhile. I personally like the Santa Ana Zoo for a number of reason.
1) First , the price is right. Admission is only $7 and $3.50 if you go after 2pm (closes at 5pm). 2) Going in the afternoon is great because this zoo is not an all day zoo. It has much more of a casual laidback feeling compared to the massiveness of other zoos. This is a real plus for parents. Plus, 3) it is not crowded, which provides a huge advantage over the San Diego Zoo where as a child I found myself squeezed against the glass windows of exhibits and waiting in a crowded hot line for 1.5 hours just to see a certain animal or go on the bus. And finally, 4) there is no commercialism. Instead the zoo offers actual education. Zoos these days tend to be far too commercial and have lost sight of the learning experience.
